The National School broke up for the summer holidays on the 4th of August. The Vicar distributed the prizes - kindly provided, as usual, by Mrs. E O Jones - to the children in the upper Standards who had gained a certain proportion of marks during the year, to those in the lower Standards who had made a fixed number of attendances, and in the Infant School to all the children. We would ask parents to observe that these prizes are open to all, and depend entirely upon the regularity, good conduct, and diligence of the children; as shewn by their school cards, week by week, during the year. Certificates of merit were also given to the children in the 4th, 5th, and 6th Standards, who successfully passed the examination, by Her Majesty's Inspector, on the 28th June. The Vicar congratulated the children on the good Report lately received from the Education Department, and urged all to work hard at school and behave well at home - that they might receive an equally good Report under the New Code in 1883; and prove to their parents and friends that the teaching and discipline of school were not lost upon them. The School will re-open on Monday September 4th, at 9 o'clock.
AS will be seen by the Kalendar Notes, Mrs Trotter and Mrs Smithyman
purpose resuming the weekly Mothers' Meetings, held in the Parish
Room at the Vicarage, on Thursday September 7th at 2.45 p.m.
The Thursday Evening Service at Bullo will also be resumed on the
7th at 7.30 p.m.
THE Gloucester and District Association of Church School Managers and Teachers held their annual Meeting in the National School-room on Saturday, August 5th. The members - of whom but a small body were able to be present - attended a short special Service in the Church at 11.45., when the Rev W S Matthews officiated, in the unavoidable absence of the Vicar. At the meeting which followed new officers were elected for the ensuing year; new members, including Mr. M F Carter from this parish, were admitted; and other business was transacted. The members strolled about, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery, in the afternoon; tea was provided in the Schoolroom at 5.30., and all returned to Gloucester and the neighbouring parishes in the evening.
FLOWER SHOW
THE fifth annual Cottagers' Flower Show, for Newnham and the neighbouring parishes, was held in the usual field - kindly lent by James Wintle, Esq., on Monday August 7th, being Bank Holiday. The day was beautifully fine and hot; and the Show, and the Athletic Sports which followed, were very enjoyable and successful. The spacious tent was adorned with choice flowers kindly sent by Mrs Henry Crawshay, Russell J Kerr Esq., and James Wintle Esq. Sir Thomas Crawley-Boevey showed a collection of fruit, and several other amateur gardeners contributed fruit and flowers for exhibition. We are very glad to find that the number of Cottage competitors in increasing, and that in quality and beauty the flowers, fruit and vegetables entered for competition, show every year signs of improvement.
For the new prizes of a guinea and half-a-guinea, offered by the
Committee for the best kept cottagers' gardens in this parish, there
were ten entries; and John Locke and Edward Fox were the successful
competitors. Miss Annie Simmonds won the prize of a box of gloves-
offered for the best basket of flowers, to be hung from the roof
of the tent.
At 4.15 Russell J Kerr Esq., distributed the cottagers' prizes, and proposed
votes of thanks to Mr. Wintle for his kindness in allowing the use of his fields
for the Show and Sports; to Mr. Douglas Wintle for so ably discharging the
duties of Hon. Secretary; and to his Committee - Messrs Boucher, Carefield,
Edwards, Jones, Whatley, and Wherrett, who had worked so well in bringing about
the success of the Show.
