River Severn at Lydney October 31st 1960

The Severn Rail Bridge ran across the river behind the girls. Some piers of the rail bridge can just be made out in the background. The bridge had been damaged in an accident just days earlier. It was never repaired.
The full bridge is shown in the image below in a drawing from 1935. The 4th and 5th span from the left and one pier were removed in the accident.

The drawing above by Gwendoline Dow, was drawn in 1935 while she was a student at Lydney Art School.
The image suffers from reflections as it was photographed through glass.

    Bob Barnett (from Facebook) – Last train over was worked by driver Donald Powell & fireman Graham Morgan of Lydney with loco 6341 on the Lydney – Stoke Gifford (Bristol) night freight on 25th October 1960, just minutes before two river tanker boats hit the bridge. Of interest, the last train of coal to Lydney docks was at the end of the same month of 1960.
