Maurice Martin Meek and Betty Meek in Ruardean.

Meek, Ruardean

Betty Turner (nee Meek) and Maurice Martin Meek her father.
David wrote (Oct 2006):

"The picture of my wife in Guide uniform was taken outside the old Ruardean Village Hall, which, at that time, was in Cat's Hill. This photograph shows her in the uniform of Captain of the 1st. Ruardean Girl Guides, and was taken about 1946/48."

"The photograph of Maurice Martin in his miners' clothing was taken at Ruardean Woodside, at the home of his brother-in-law, Frank Tippens, who was married to Laura, the sister of Maurice's wife, Mary. Betty tells me that her dad, Maurice, and Uncle Frank jointly owned a pig, and they were going to kill it in time for Christmas. Maurice swapped shifts to be able to be there during the day, and did a night shift instead - it was on that night shift that the rock fall occurred, killing him. Although Betty's dad was called Maurice Martin, her mother, Mary, always referred to him as 'Mart'".

Maurice was killed in an accident at Northern United Colliery in December 1942 aged 41 years. (source correspondence with David Turner and "Mining and Quarry Fatalities in the Forest of Dean" - Forest of Dean Local History Society (CD) - 2006.)
