Tara wrote: "The attached photo is of Mr and Mrs William Matthews who are listed in the commercial section of the Harris Forest of Dean Almanac & directory 1897 (Coalway Lane End). Mr Matthews was a carpenter and undertaker. My Grandad Terry Wilce who has supplied this photo, is Mr and Mrs Matthews' great grandson".

Roger Matthews wrote (November 2009): "... this is indeed a photo of my great grandparents. The cottage was/is certainly in Broadwell - next to the former Rising Sun pub. The reason the Harris survey mentions Coalway Lane End is that there was almost certainly no Broadwell Lane End at that time. The 1830 Ordnance Survey map shows no Broadwell or Coalway - only Mile End!".

MatthewsAlan Evans added (November 2009): "... William Matthews is also my Great Grandfather their daughter Lydia married my Grand Father Timothy Smith he had two children Horace and my Mother Gladys May".

"The photo left shows my Grand parents Timothy Smith and Lydia (nee Matthews) with my Mother Gladys May and Uncle Horace, the photo must have been taken about 1914".

Leslie Matthews added (March 2011): "... William and Leah Matthews nee Martin were my great great grandparents. I am descended from their son Frederick William Matthews who moved to South Wales in 1897. I have information which traces the family back to the 1750s but have never seen this photo before".
