A photo of the Nelmes family at Lydney Docks

Nelmes family at Lydney Docks c.1928

For the past few years I have been researching my genealogy. Both of my paternal Grandparents came from Lydney. I have a picture (above) of my grandmother( maiden name Nelmes) standing with her mother and siblings outside their long demolished cottage at Lydney Harbour where there father John Nelmes was head lockgateman. The photo is circa 1920. I suspect he took it. I spent last weekend in Lydney with my Dad and sisters chasing my ancestry! Their lives were based around St Mary’s and the harbour. It was fascinating.

This actually is circa 1920, from left to right is Hilda, her mother Annie, James, Percy, my Grandmother Ethel, Kathleen.

Correction! My Grandmother was Edith not Ethel!
