Primrose Hill Mesne playing fields in 1947

A photo taken on Primrose Hill, Lydney in 1947

"Photograph taken in 1947 of the roundabout ride on Primrose Hill Mesne playing fields. The young children are Max and Nan Wilkins whose family home is shown behind them. Looking after them is Vee Jordan (nee Dukes) who was married to Russell Jordan. Sat either side of her are Des and his wife her parents Mr and Mrs Dukes who were next door neighbours to the Wilkins family (see comment from Max below). In the background can be seen the Severn View Pub".

Peter Essex added: " ... I remember Russell Jordan from the fifties when he was in the butcher's department of the Lydney Co-op and organist of Springfield Methodist Church".

David Dunn added: "... I spent many happy hours at this spot and I remember the smell of freshly baked bread from Mr. Wilkins' bakery off to the left in the background. This picture was taken before the top part of the mesne was enlarged by dumping masses of soil leaving the embankment separating it from the lower mesne".

Max (in photo) added (November 2018): . "Vee Jordan holding Nan. Russell Jordan taking photo. Lady and gentleman in photo - not Mr and Mrs Dukes but - "Des" (no known surname) and his wife from Chichester in Sussex. They were close and good friends of 'Russ' and 'Vee' - Russ and "Des" had, previous to 1947, both served together in the RAF during the war They had kept in touch and "Des" and his wife regularly visited Russ and Vee at Primrose Hill .They were visiting that day and l almost recapture it".
