Alfred Roberts, charcoal burner

Sue added: "... I thought it was time to send you a copy of my Grandfather Alfred Roberts who was a charcoal burner in the Forest. Alfred is a brother of Mr E. A. Roberts who you have on the sungreen website in the article about charcoal burning. I have been told that they would be out for days in the forest doing the burning, and that my grandmother used to send food down to my Granddad when this happened to keep him going. Edward and Alfred's father Charles Henry and their grandfather Thomas also carried out charcoal burning, so it was a family thing back in those days.
Peggy Ryland added: "... The photo brings back memories. When I was a little child we went on Nature walks from Plump School down where the Charcoal site was. Our teacher told us all about Mr Roberts. As we used charcoal at school it was very interesting. Next to the site was a gypsy encampment in those days with coloured wagons as you can imagine a beautiful scene amongst the Forest background of coloured foliage".
