Below ground at Park Gutter

We thought that this photo may have been taken below ground at Park Gutter (Princess Royal Colliery) although surviving ex Princess Royal miners think that the single track arangement and the means of attaching to the rope suggests that it may not. In Princess Royal, the track ran very close to the tunnel wall on the near side and the miners riding the trolley had to "keep their knees in". The number of steel roof supports suggest that the trolley may be approaching a "landing". The miners all appear to be wearing their caps, this being in the days before pit helmets were worn. In the foreground, the hoofmarks left by the Pit Ponies can be clearly seen.
