Chal Thomas a Bream miner

Chal Thomas a Bream miner (34k)

Chal is standing on what is now BeachWay. He has carried home his miner's lamp to prepare it for the next day's work. Over his shoulder he carries his tommy bag in which he would transport his "bread". This photo was taken before the Pit Baths were built. The miners would have to walk home in their work clothes. They would have to wash in the "tin bath" filled with hot water heated on the Range in the cottage. His wife Liz for many years did her washing using a "dolly" and tub using hot water heated in an adjoining out-building which she always refered to as "The Shop"
This photo is on display at the Dean Heritage Museum at Soudley.
