Bream, Bromley Furnace in the Oakwood Valley

Bromley Furnace, Bream (42k)

This photo looking up the Oakwood Valley towards Speech House shows the Bromley Furnace with it's chimney and a private house beyond. Bromley Furnace was opened in 1856 by Ebbw Vale Steel & Iron Works. It was out of use by 1877. Oakwood Mill is out of the photo to the left. In the middle distance the Oakwood Chemical Works building is just visible. Smoke is rising from Flourmill Colliery which is just beyond the Chemical Works. The chimney was blown up in 1939, the stones being taken to Redbrook to build a retaining wall. Some of the stones however were re-used in buildings near Bream Schools.
