James Griffiths a Forest of Dean miner from Yorkley.

The photo is of Gilbert's grand-father James Griffiths ( 1858 – 1929). He is pictured in the garden of his home in City Lane, Yorkley. James worked at New Fancy colliery.
Also his registration card. The National Registration Act of 1915, as indicated by the date, shows that the 1st war was already raging. The Act was debated in the War Cabinet between those who wanted to continue the policy of voluntarism and those who advocated conscription. The Act required that all men and women between the ages of 15 and 65 years register locally. For those who pushed for conscription, the Act furnished them with the number of men available to fight – around 1.4 million.
