Forest Cycling Club Road Race in Cinderford High St, in July 1957
The competitors stream down Cinderford High St. towards Steam Mills. Vernon added (Sept 2006): "The picture shows Lower High Street in Cinderford outside what was the Seven Stars pub with the old 'Jones's Garage' (Now Abbotswood Garage, the BP garage) in the background".
Colin Davies added (Jan 2009): " 'Jones Garage' mentioned in the photo is incorrect (That was on up in the town, on the opposite side of the road, next to the Red & White bus office/garage). The garage prior to Abbottswood traded as G E Griffiths and was run by George's son Tony, until it closed. I worked there when I left Berry Hill School aged 15 in 1965. It was then right on the roadside and during the 6 months or so I was there, it was flattened and redesigned with a forecourt. At the time I used to cycle from Lydbrook 6 days a week for £2 17shillings and 6 pence wages!! I don't remember names of the people I worked with apart from a fitter called George?? who was very active in the Salvation Army".
