Ivy Dorothy Batten (nee Watkins) 1902 - 1986 - 5

Two years after that Dad died suddenly in the coal mine, he was only 44 years old, he left Mother with 8 of us and Grantley was only 10 months old, he also died suddenly at the age of 44, Esme died when she was 51, only 6 weeks before Grantley died. Norman died at 28, he was a wonderful brother he always wanted to do something for you. When he was dying as a result of playing football for Wembley he said "I haven't an enemy in the world, I love you all” and then he died in his sweethearts arms Lucy Betteridge a lovely girl from the farm at Woolaston she was 28 and they were engaged to be married. He had promised Lucy a sewing machine so asked Harold and Frank that if he didn't get better to draw his money out of the bank and take Lucy to buy her the best sewing machine they could find. After it was all over took I Lucy back to London with me for two weeks to get over the terrible shock that we all had. As the years passed by Lucy often visited mother and I remember that she crocheted Mother a beautiful lace afternoon cloth of which Mother was always proud of. When Mother passed away we lost touch of Lucy for many years until one day a lady came to see at my Inn the "Freemason Arms” at Chepstow, and much to my surprise it was Lucy, it brought back all our memories of dear Norman. Lucy came again about 10 years ago and we had tea together there. I always remember Lucy at Christmas time and she always remembers me, we hope to meet each other again one day.| Previous Page | Next Page |
