| Three
young men about to leave for a shifts work, the person on the left is
Bert Brooks, 1918c. Bert Brooks was born in 1902 at Coleford, he worked
in the pit all his life, and was fatally injured by a roof fall at Cannop
Colliery in 1957. The small bags on the string are almost certainly their "bread" (lunch) - probably bread and cheese. The can would usually contain their drink of cold tea. Note the carbide lamps, the well worn boots, the trousers tied just below the knees and the distinctive caps. |
