The memorial stone, sometimes refered to as the Paddock Stone was erected in the memory of Reverend John Frederick Gosling. It can be found in a field known as "The Paddock" just off Parawell Lane. The stone covers a spring called the Paddock Well. A footpath ran from the church, across Bucks Meadow to the well which would have been a source of fresh water for the lower end of the village. A supply of fresh water from a tap in the wall of Meadow Well on the Lydney road would sometimes run dry. When this happened, villagers would have to make the journey to Paddock Well which was a reliable source of fresh water. |
