Miners Welfare Hall, The first Miners Welfare Committee 1926 Back Row : Tom Nash, Charlie Brice, Tom Carter. Middle Row : Oliver Hoare, Freddie (Joby) Watkins, Jim Price, Jesse Miles, Jack Kent. Front Row : Arthur Saunders, Fred Wicks, Albert Brookes, Tom Kear, Will Hoare, George Hall. Tom Nash was manager of the local Co-Op, Charlie Brice was a Butcher, Jim Price was a pub landlord (of The Two Swans - or Double Ducks as it was locally known) Jack Kent was a disabled soldier from World War One. The remainder were miners or retired miners. The ground the hall stands on was kindly given to the Miners Welfare by the late Mr Ralph Williams of Williams and Cotton. The Hall was built by local builder Joe Kear. The miners of the village worked on the hall for free during the miners strike of 1926. |
