Bream Post Office in 1991
The
main Post Office which had served Bream for many years, ceased to exist
in
1990. The premises were converted by the present owner Mr Anton Randall
into a new business - Bream Auto Store.
This building originally was home not just to a Post Office, but also
to a Sorting Office and Telephone Exchange.
The red Phone box has now gone as has the Post Box and Stamp Machine.
To the left of the Post Office is Highbury House, built in the 1860s..
Beneath the stone on which the house name is inscribed is a Fire Plate.
This
was fixed to the house by the fire insurance company - to show that the
premises was insured against fire.
Anton has done much work to keep the buildings as original as possible.
To the rear of the buildings there was once a 2-horse stable. A tennis
court once existed at the rear adjacent to the Rugby Club wall.
Anton added (May 2009): "... with ref to Bream old Post Office. In the mid 1800's it was built as a general store with horse and cart deliveries. Later it housed a Telephone Exchange, Sorting Office (ref Joyce Phipps whose family lived in and owned the building for many years), and lastly Post Office and Video Store, (old exchange board found in cellar). The Post Office closed in 1990".
