Diana wrote (June 2007): " This old postcard of St Briavels (postmark 1923?) was sent to my Grandmother Mrs Mary Eliza Baker when she was living at Primrose Cottage, Clearwell. She and my Grandfather, George Baker, subsequently moved to The New Inn, Parkend where George was the Licencee for many years.
Their youngest daughter Elizabeth Daphne Baker (known as Daphne) was a Land Girl and I attach a photo of her taken in April 1943 in the Forest (bottom left). She was married in Parkend Church (St Pauls) on 5th June 1945 to Captain John Bryant Thomas from Gallatin, Tennessee who was stationed in the Forest. The wedding photo shows Mrs Mary Eliza Baker, George Baker, Daphne and John, and Hubert Thomas the best man (brother of John) who was also stationed in this country".

The shop in the photo was run by the "bottom Davis" family. The other Davis family in St Briavels lived further up the hill and were refered to as the "top Davis" family.

The photographer was standing with the castle wall behind him, the church is along the road to his right.
