Worsfold's Gardens

Eric wrote: "... Albert Worsfold (1892-1969), who worked as an overman at Eastern United Colliery, began constructing the ornamental gardens, pictured in the postcards, on derelict land behind his home in about 1930, assisted by his son Jack. The work took about six years of his spare time to complete. The gardens attracted thousands of visitors in the late 1930’s, ‘40’s and into the 1950’s. At certain times they were also floodlit by the Cinderford Gas Co. to accommodate visitors in the evenings. The large lawn in the upper part of the garden was used as a bowling green and teams travelled from as far as Monmouth to play there. It was also used as a tennis court. No charge was made for admission but donations given by appreciative visitors were passed to the Dilke Memorial Hospital, Cinderford".
