EASTER
Easter Day was warm and beautiful; the Church looked bright with
flowers, the congregations were good, and the number of communicants
was larger than ever before.
The fine weather continued throughout Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday,
and made the holiday most enjoyable. On Easter Monday the 'H' Company
- Gloucester Rifles held their annual prize shooting competition
at the home range. The following is a list of the first six winners
in order of merit. Sergeant Dredge, first prize, (for the fourth
time in succession) 3; Corporal Worlike £2.10s.; Corporal Lewis £1.5s.;
Other Prize winners were Captain Maule, Sergeants Wintour, Blanton
and Simmonds, Corporal Howell. Privates Gardner, Morgan, Heiron,
Davis, Bartlett, Smith, Lee, and Hughes, and Bugler Ferris.
Prizes were also awarded to the following members of the Newnham
Section for attendance at drill; Sergeant Dredge and Corporal R.Simmonds £1.5s
each; Colour Sergeant Blanton, Sergeant Simmonds, Private Clarke,
11s.6d.each; Private W Knight 5s. Similar prizes were given to members
of the Lydney and Littledean Sections. After the shooting the members
adjourned to the National Schoolroom, where by the kindness of Captain
Maule a substantial tea had been provided. After tea the Captain
announced, in the course of an address, that the annual training
would commence on the 15th July, in a camp formed this year on Stinchcombe
Hill, instead of at Minchinhampton as heretofore. There is drill
for the Newnham Section every Thursday evening, at 7.p.m., at the
National School.

PAROCHIALIA
The annual Easter Vestry was held on Thursday in Easter week - the
Vicar presiding. the retiring Churchwardens Mr. A.H. Maule and Mr.
M.F.Carter were re-elected; the former to act as Vicar's warden,
the latter on behalf of the parish. In asking Mr. Maule again to
undertake office, the Vicar thanked both Churchwardens of their help
and devotion to duty in the past year, during a very trying time,
and a vote of thanks was also proposed and seconded by Mr Headdon
and Mr. W.H King, and cordially given to Mr. Carter, for his services
to the parish. In the course of some discourse and remarks which
followed, much anxiety was expressed as to the present condition
and future prospects of the organ; and it was thought probable that
Messrs. Forster & Andrews would advise its removal, until the
chamber be less damp than at present, as the only hope of saving
it from ruin.
On Monday, April 17th, Mr C.C.Cotton, brother-in-law of the Vicar
of Awre, kindly exhibited his Magic Lantern in the Schoolroom, in
aid of the funds of the parochial library, which sadly needs replenishing
with books. There was not a very large attendance, but those who
were there had much reason to be pleased. The Lantern burns the oxy-hydrogen
light, and the series of dissolving views was very varied and interesting.
Rogation Tuesday, May 16th will be observed as in former years as
a Day of Intercession for a blessing on the Home and Foreign Missions
of the Church. We would beg all those who firmly believe in the power
of united prayer, and who recognize the duty of extending CHRIST'S
Kingdom in our colonies and among the heathen, to make it a day of
real usefulness and blessing. There will be a special service with
sermon at 11., and at 7.30., with offertories ain aid of the Society
for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts.
Ascension Day, May 18th, is one of the brightest Festivals of the
Church. it commemorates our LORD's return to Heaven, when His life
of humiliation was over, and His suffering work on earth finished.
May all whose hearts and hopes are with Him in Heaven, come and worship
Him on Ascension Day. It would be possible for very many to get to
the early Communion before work begins and to Evening Service after
work is over.
CHURCH RESTORATION
A meeting of the Church Building Committee was held on Wednesday,
April 19th, when Mr. Waller read the following final report.
"
Gentlemen, - A long time has elapsed since the completion of the
works connected with the restoration of this Building, and the accounts
connected with such works would have been presented very much earlier
but for the long and serious illness of Mr. Carrington, the Surveyor.
Hoping that he would recover, I have felt much delicacy under all
the circumstances in intruding on his more especial province but
his complaint has lately assumed so serious an aspect, that I have
thought it best to take the matter of the accounts into consideration,
without further delay, and especially as I have been urgently requested
to do so by your Chairman. I have therefore carefully considered
the whole subject, with the help of such necessary particulars as
I have been enabled to obtain from the invalid and his clerk; and
I now beg to lay before you the following financial statement:-

The Church Building Committee earnestly appeal to the friends of
the Church, and to those who have not already subscribed, to assist
in meeting this rather heavy deficiency in the funds. Contributions
may still be paid in to the Vicar's account with the Gloucestershire
Banking Company.
DIOCESAN SCHOOL INSPECTION
Reports of the Rev. C H Awdry Diocesan Inspector. March 14th, 1882.
MIXED SCHOOL. -"there is every reason to be satisfied with the
progress made during the past year. With the exception of the second
group, who were a little dull in their answering on the Catechism,
the School has passed a very good examination throughout, and the
order is unexceptionable."
INFANTS SCHOOL. -"these infants are in very good order, have
been efficiently taught, and passed a creditable examination."
LOCAL BOARD
The Annual Election, to fill vacancies caused by retirement of members,
by rotation and disqualification in consequence of non-attendance,
took place last month, when the following qualified persons were
elected: Messrs. C.A. Gould, J.Hoyle, A.Parker, J.R.Philpotts,
J.Wintle, and S.W.Woods. There was no contest, the only new name
being that of Mr. C.A.Goold; vice Nr. W.W.Ware resigned. The Board
now consists of the above-mentioned persons together with Russell
J.Kerr, Esq., Chairman, and Messrs J.Boucher, W.Headdon, A.H.Maule,
J.Shiles, and H.Wellington
The annual Meeting of the Bible Society was held on Thursday, April
27th, at the Town Hall. The Rev.E.Jelinger-Symons, District Secretary
for Lancashire, attended as the representative of the Society, and
gave a very interesting and instructive address. The collection in
the room amounted to £1.3s4d.; the boxes in the hands of collectors
yielded £1.8s.1d., and a large number of subscribers, to whom
the thanks of the Society are due, contributed £9.10.6d.

A very considerable falling off in the amount of General Offertories
will be noticed. This is entirely due to the fact that much smaller
sums than usual were received weekly in the School-room. Since the
re-opening of the Church the Offertories have quite maintained their
former average.
