| A rare photo of a pit pony taken underground, probably at Cannop. The Cannop pit ponies were brought to the surface after each shift. Other pits stabled the ponies below ground. Donald Johns and Ray Jackson, both spent some time as Ostlers, Don at Park Gutter and Ray at Eastern and both said that the ponies were extremely well looked after. One of Don's ponies had a a particular liking for raw onions. Their stables were always kept spotless. The photo belonged to Maurice's father Elias Thomas who was a Deputy at Cannop. | |||||||||||||||
