Swan Hotel, Cinderford
Two photos of the Swan Hotel in Cinderford.
Top - taken on a royal occasion.
Bottom - taken during the winter of 1947
Micheal Stephens wrote (August 2009): "The shop on the left at one time was Cinderford Coop grocery shop and in 1968 I worked for the Coop there for a short while. It was one of 3 grocery stores the Coop had in Cinderford at the time".
Thanks also to Ian Thomas who added (August 2009): "The Swan Hotel in Cinderford was decorated to celebrate the Coronation of Edward VII during 1902. The lady with the little girl in the foreground I believe to be Mrs Runnicles, the wife of the Cinderford photographer who took the picture. She appears in quite a number of his pictures".
John Phillips added (December 2011): "... I remember the great white winter of 1947. The front of The Swan was almost completely covered in snow and someone drew a Chad with the caption 'Wot no pub'. Chad was a wartime cartoon character portraying shortages. It' is a pity the photo is not clear enough to identify people with certainty. It is just possible that the lady seen to the right of the pub and carrying a shopping bag could be my mother Maud Phillips nee Murrell - but I cannot be absolutely sure".
