Double View School, Cinderford in 1915

Double View School 1915

Double View School, Standards 6 and 7A, 1915

Row 2: 6 Frederick Colwell

John Harris added: "... the gentleman front right is the notorious headmaster, Mr Emery".

Christopher Dent added: "... I am not absolutely certain but, comparing this with other contemporary photographs, believe that third row from front, 10 from left (excluding the schoolteacher) is Arthur Joseph Dent, my father, who lived in St Annals Road.  He was later the Reverend Arthur Dent, a Methodist minister".

Jane Harrington added (June 2014): "... John Alfred Emery, Headmaster of the school, was my great uncle by marriage, to my great aunt (Lilian Ethel Jones). I know nothing about him (other than that he was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society) but I would love to hear why he was "notorious", in John Harris's words".

Christopher Dent added (August 2015): "... In response to Jane Harrington's note, there's a whole chapter on John Emery in Leonard Clark's book 'Green Wood' (2nd ed. Dobson, 1978) - secondhand copies on Amazon. Emery taught Leonard Clark, who became a teacher, an HMI, and a poet".
