Arthur Jones nicknamed "Arthur Nine-Pigs" was in charge of
the horses at Park Gutter. In the late 1920s he had a win on the Irish
Sweepstake
with a 10 shilling ticket. First prize was £2,000.
Arthur was involved with Bream Rugby Club, who had a very good team at
the time. He bought a Willis Knight (car) and used in to pick up miners
on a match day. Players that had to work "down the pit" before
the game, went down on the "first bond" so that they would
be first to come up from "Pit
Bottom" at the end of the shift. Arthur would be waiting with his
Willis, to whisk them up Whitecroft Road to Bream R.F.C. H.Q. and
changing rooms at the Rising
Sun Inn, Bream. There was no time
to
wash,
so
the
miners
changed
into
their
rugby
kit
and had to play the game in their "pit dirt".
